Decanter system for muddy juice treatment
Unlike the conventional centrifugal machine used for separating sugar crystal from mother liquor, either in batch or continuous, where mother liquor by application of centrifugal force passes through the screen openings; the decanter although in centrifugal machine, does not have any perforations over the rotating basket. The basic principle of using centrifugal force for solid/liquid separation universally remains the same.
The only difference is that, the insoluble solids, when subjected to centrifugal force get separated from liquid towards basket surface, and are continuously pushed towards discharge end by a rotating helical scroll. The decanted juice is continuously taken out through a concentric opening.
Separation takes place in a horizontal cylindrical bowl equipped with a screw conveyor, the feed enters the bowl through a stationary inlet tube and is accelerated smoothly by an inlet distributor.
The centrifugal force that stems from the rotation then causes sedimentation of the solids on the wall of the bowl.
The conveyor rotates in the same direction as the bowl, but at a different speed, thus moving the solids towards the conical end of the bowl. The cake leaves the bowl through the solids discharge openings into the casing.
Separation takes place throughout the entire length of the cylindrical part of the bowl, and the clarified liquid leaves the bowl by flowing over adjustable plate dams into the casing.
Decanter system for muddy juice treatment is operated in two stages :
First stage operation
- Consistency of muddy juice is in the range of 1055-1065 grams/ltr.
- Addition of milk of lime in first stage mud tank for neutralizing pH of muddy juice if required.
- Maintain pH of muddy juice in the range of 7.0-7.2
- Controlled addition of polymer with respect to muddy juice flow rate to decanter machine.
- Anionic polymer is used approximate 7 to 8 ppm on cane.
Second stage operation
- Proportionate addition of hot water with respect to first stage muddy juice flow.
- Conditioning of mud slurry in mud conditioner.
- Consistency of muddy juice is in the range of 1035-1050 grams/ltr.
- Controlled addition of polymer with respect to muddy juice flow rate to decanter machine.
- Anionic polymer is used approximate 6 to 7 ppm on cane.
